| Shriyanka’s success shoots up Odisha image |

Sambalpur: Seventeen-year-old Shriyanka Sadangi, daughter of Col S C Sadangi and Mrs Sudha Sadangi of Sambalpur has added immensely to the image of Odisha in development of sports. She recently brought laurels for the nation when she won silver medal in the 10-metre Air Rifle Women Junior Team category with an individual fifth rank in final competition at the 12th Asian Shooting Championship held at Doha, Qatar.
In the Asian Airgun Championship that was held at Kuwait in October, 2011, she won an International Gold Medal in the 10-m Air Rifle team event.Shriyanka is part of the national squad for shooting. |

| Madhuri scripts magnificent story in Odisha women’s cricket |
| Madhuri Mehta’s selection into the nation women cricket squad has come as a big and pleasant surprise for sports lovers of the state in the beginning of the New Year 2012. She along with other probables will take part in a training camp. If selected fir the final squad, she would tour West Indies to play five T20 and three one-day games. “Madhur’s selection is an honour to the state. Her inclusion in the team has proved our unstinted effort to roll out quality players from among hidden the talents,” Odisha Cricket Association Secretary Ashirbad Behera commented soon after the news came about 20-years-old girl’s selection. Born to Pardip Mehta and Ahuti Mishra of Adarshpara in Bolangir town, Madhuri is a firebrand opener and a strong fielder. She has represented Odisha in under-19 games. He has also played for East Zone under Jhulon Goswami, the captain of national women squad. Inspired by her cricketer father, Madhri plunged into cricket when she was just 14. Though she has several remarkable knocks to her credit, the 71-rnu innings she scored again Utter Pradesh in 2010-2011 season while playing for East Zone, attracted the attention of selectors. Bolangir women’s cricket team coach Arun Kumar Nayak, secretary Harinarayan Pujari, and others have congratulated Madhuri and her parents. A 2nd year degree student at Patneswari College, Patnagarh, - Madhuri has a long way to go. Indus Valley Times wishes her all the best. |

This coveted tournament will certainly bridge the gap between cricketers whether they belong to big cities or countryside, who knows this tournament, might give a bunch of cricketers a perfect platform to perform. With the announcement of IPL, a wave of exhilaration spreads throughout Orissa as so many cricketers did not get any chance to expose their talent earlier, certainly now they will get the much desired opportunity to showcase their talent before the electrifying spectators of Orissa. If young cricketers play extraordinarily as twenty-twenty cricket being known for extreme hitting power abilities, it could be easy for them to knocking at the door of selectors of OCA very often to get into the team of Orissa making the bench strength of Orissa stronger than ever before.

“ We have already sent a pool of 400 players from under 16, under 19, under 22 and district level to different franchisers of OPL. Every franchiser has the option to choose their best side and every player will go under the hammer as per the satisfaction of every franchiser and OCA has no role in it,” informs Mr Behera.
Mr Behera said a team from Orissa will feature in the next edition of IPL as many people are coming forward we are determined to translate our dream into reality and people of this country will definitely get the flavor of Orissa in next edition of IPL.
OPL chairman Mr Tirupati Panigrahi said the new regional format would boost the confidence of the local budding stars and they can take on the world with renewed vigour and courage.

Wonder sprinter Rajeswari makes Orissa proud

Bhubaneswar: Six-years old Rajeswari is a marvel, a wonder kid indeed! Blessed with immense potentialities, she has proved that age is not a bar to exhibit one's talent.
The little girl has been scaling height and height in sprint and heading towards a highly promising sports career. Now she is a Standard III student in Kuansh UP School, Bhadrak. While Standard I, the four-year-old Rajeswari exhibited talent when she ran a distance of 40 km from Bhadrak to Aradi (a famous Shiva Khetra) in just five hours, surprising all and sundry.
Next came her incredible feat - she ran a non-stop 58-km distance from Bhadrak to Jajpur Biraja Kshetra to wish good luck to the India cricket team, within eight hours. This was highly appreciated by the Indian cricket legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
During the last appearance of the Indian cricket team in Barabati against England, the five-year-old girl met Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to wish them good luck. India won that match comfortably.
This tiny tot has won high accolades from former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, former Vice-President of India, besides Orissa Governor Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare.
Besides, she has earned hundreds of prizes and certificates of merit from her own state and also from the United States. She has been marching ahead in her mission, and to add another feather to the cap of her glory, she ran a distance of 80 km from Orissa, Bhadrak to Khirochora Gopinath temple at Remuna, Balasore last year.
Her fame became so widespread that the West Bengal Olympic Association also came forward to felicitate her with the prizes and certificates. Yet it is an irony that the state government has not paid due attention to such a child prodigy. In spite of Dr. APJ Former President APJ Abdul Kalam's recommended the state government to provide Rajeswar financial assistance but the latter is yet to act. |
